MDUSD Saves Winter Sports

On Tuesday evening, October 27, the MDUSD board voted to allow winter sports to continue this year.  Thanks to the many Heritage Club members that participated in the 5k run and many other fundraising activities that supported the efforts of the United Mt. Diablo Athletic Foundation www.unitedmtdiabloathletics.org.  These fundraising efforts will need to continue, along with participant’s contributions, to ensure winter and spring sports will continue.

An article in the Contra Costa Times on Monday, October 26 included comments from Heritage Strikers Shoshana Wangerin, Julia Harrigan and Kaitlin Dick that captured their insights regarding what high school sports means to them.  This article, and many others written by Theresa Harrington of the CC Times, helped gain the support our student-athletes needed.  Thank you Theresa!  You can view this article at Contra Costa Times

A Message from the President

Welcome to the Heritage Soccer Club (HSC) and our website.  HSC was formed in February 2002 by a visionary group of people to provide a competitive outlet to serve the youth of Pleasant Hill, Martinez and surrounding areas.   We firmly believe that every child who has the ambition to play soccer at a competitive level, should be provided that opportunity.  Heritage is here to provide them that opportunity.

This year, our coaches and trainers met to develop a goal statement that each will strive to obtain with their teams.  The statement is provided above.  All training personnel have agreed that the health and safety of our children is of upmost importance.  From helping to eliminate preventable injuries (ACLs, MCLs, hamstring pulls, etc) to recognizing symptoms of head injuries, to ensuring our goals are secured correctly, our staff are making sure our kids are safe.

Heritage is an independent club with the California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA) and U. S. Club Soccer, both of which are affiliated with U. S. Soccer Federation.  Our teams play their league games through the CYSA District 4 Competitive League, the Golden State Soccer League, and US Club Soccer (Norcal Premiere League).  Our goal is continue to deliver a quality soccer experience without becoming so large that we become an assemblage of teams with no main Club identity. Our primary objective remains the development of our kids' soccer skills and to instill confidence and character within the framework of a positive coaching environment. Confidence and character will lead to life successes both on and off the soccer field.

I have been involved with the Club since its inception and I recall one of the main objectives Scott Gordon and the others who formed HSC had--to complement our local high school programs. This objective is being met based upon the fact that during the 2008/2009 high school season, 17 of Heritage's players received All League honors playing for their respective high schools.  These 17 players represented Alhambra, College Park, Carondelet, Los Lomas, Northgate, and Berean Christian.  Many of these players are looking forward to the possibility of playing collegiately.

Another reason this objective is being met is our effort to actively recruit experienced coaches.  This is effort is being spearheaded by our Technical Directors, Tracy Hamm and Julio Borge.  We are delighted to have them back again this year.  We are very excited for Tracy and her being named assistant coach to the Cal Womens soccer program.  This has increased her connections in the women's soccer world and we look forward to reaping those benefits.  Tracy has already been able to recruit many collegiate players and coaches who not only can play the game, but can also teach it.  Just like Tracy, Julio's contacts in the soccer community is tremendous.  This year Julio will be working for the San Jose Earthquakes, which will give him even more access to high level coaches.  He also helped Tracy and the Cal coaching staff during the summer at the Cal Soccer camps.

Tracy and Julio's passion for soccer is infectious and unequaled.  This passion drives them to continually improve the skills of Heritage's players and the competiveness of Heritage teams this year and the years to come.  For information on our coaches and trainers, take a look at the Coaches Page and information on our teams, go to the Team Page.

We look forward another great year, not just on the field but also off of the field.  We are in the process of planning San Jose Earthquakes and FC Gold Pride Heritage days.  A 6v6 Tournament is in the works along with our Fall fundraiser, the Black & Gold Ball.  We will continue to support our local elementary schools by providing Heritage trainers to PE teachers to help with exposing kids to soccer and sports in general.  Our Winter Academy is being provided for free this year to also help expose kids to soccer in a fun way.

Heritage provides a system of training through our coaching staff to develop skills for your children to play at the highest level they can achieve. We also have a core group of parent volunteers second to none, and we value your investment as an involved parent in the development of your kids' soccer career.  Get involved and reap the benefits! Around the world, soccer is known as the "beautiful game". Honor the game and enjoy your time in the sport!

Yours in soccer,

Jim Dick
